Challenge

The trial's efficacy assessments depended on precise central measurement of geographic atrophy lesion area and consistent longitudinal tracking of choroidal neovascularization. Lesion boundaries in retinal imaging are frequently indistinct, and small differences in how those boundaries are delineated translate into meaningful differences in measured area—differences large enough to confound endpoint analysis when measurements are compared across timepoints and readers.

Our Solution

Intrinsic Imaging's ophthalmic reading team performed meticulous lesion segmentation on SD-OCT and fundus autofluorescence imaging, applying standardized delineation criteria to every examination. Where lesion boundaries were ambiguous, a multi-reader consensus process resolved the interpretation, with each decision documented to preserve a complete audit trail. Longitudinal measurements were reviewed in context to ensure that apparent changes reflected true anatomical progression rather than segmentation variability.

Results

  • Lesion area tracking accurate to within 0.05 mm²
  • Primary endpoint readout delivered on schedule
  • Fully audited longitudinal measurements
